EverGreen/400 Base

document solution

EverGreen/400 allows any existing 5250 non-programmable workstation to act as a full e-mail capable terminal. AS/400 users are able to send and receive all kinds of information using today's powerful e-mail capabilities.

An overview of the supported features :

E-mail message handling

EverGreen/400 supports all common e-mail handling functions :

MIME attachments

EverGreen/400 supports the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) standard for attachments. This assures that any EverGreen/400 user is able to send and receive e-mail messages including attachments. EverGreen/400 supports different types of attachments :

Attachments can be saved and removed from e-mail messages in order to save disk space.

Draft messages

When creating an e-mail message, the message can be saved as a draft instead of being sent to the e-mail server. This allows the user to complete the draft message at a later point in time or to use the draft as a template for creating other messages.

Enhanced editor

Every user has the possibility to select one of the two editors which are included in EverGreen/400 for creating e-mail messages :

Multiple mail cabinets

EverGreen/400 provides all users with 5 different mail cabinets:

In each of the mail cabinets (except the Outbox) a structure of hierarchical folders can be set up, to allow a better organization of e-mail messages.

Address Books

Every EverGreen/400 user has his own Personal Address Book which can be used to store e-mail addresses of frequently used addressees. Depending on the user's preferences, the sender's address of incoming messages can be added automatically to the Personal Address Book.

Every EverGreen/400 user also has the possibility to create so-called Named Address Books. These named address books can be used to group certain addressees, and can be made public to other EverGreen/40 users for sharing contact information.

A named address book can be imported on basis of a DB2/400 database file or a CSV file. It is also possible to export a personal, named or public address book to a DB2/400 or a CSV file. In this way, e-mail addresses can be shared with other applications.

The iSeries System Distribution Directory is available to all EverGreen/400 users as a system-wide address book, and is maintained by the System Administrator. Users are able to copy entries from the System Distribution Directory to their own personal address book or any named address book to which they have access. The System Distribution Directory can be synchronized with the Lotus Domino for iSeries Public Address Book using Directory Synchronization.

While creating an e-mail message, any address book can be used to select the e-mail addresses of standard, carbon copy (CC) and blind carbon copy (BCC) recipients.

It is also possible to access other address books on the Internet via an LDAP server. LDAP is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, an Internet industry standard which allows a connection to any standard Internet/Intranet address book on another server. The obvious advantage of this new feature is enhanced productivity and immediate access to e-mail addresses around the world of customers, colleagues and vendors without extensive research.

Delivery options

When sending an e-mail message, the user is able to specify whether the message should be sent using low, normal or high priority.

A return receipt can be requested when sending an e-mail message. This way the recipient's e-mail software will inform the sender when the message has been received successfully.

Multiple stationeries

A stationery is a piece of text, typically containing company name, address, telephone, etc., which will be included automatically in all outgoing messages. An EverGreen/400 user can define multiple stationeries. When sending an e-mail message the user is able to indicate which stationery should be appended to the message.

Leave mail on server

With the "Leave mail on server" capability, PC-based e-mail users can use EverGreen/400 to temporarily access and answer their e-mail from any 5250 terminal, while leaving the messages on the server. Later on, those same e-mail messages can be retrieved again with the normal PC-based e-mail client so that e-mail messages can be stored locally in their regular archives and folders.

Configuration and Administration

EverGreen/400 provides different AS/400 menus and commands for configuration and administration. This includes commands for creating and maintaining server and user definitions.

Every EverGreen/400 user has multiple mail cabinets, which are implemented as different IFS stream files. This allows a fast and easy save/restore, using the standard OS/400 SAV and RST commands, which is important for setting up daily backup and recovery procedures.

National Language Support (NLS)

EverGreen/400 has been developed to support national languages. The user interface is currently available in English, French, German and Spanish. One single EverGreen/400 installation allows a mix of different user interface languages.

Message contents will be converted automatically between the ASCII character set used for e-mail transmission and the user's EBCDIC code page on the AS/400.

Server support

EverGreen/400 V2R1 Base supports the following e-mail servers :

One of these servers needs to be installed on the same AS/400 on which EverGreen/400 is installed.

It is also possible to communicate with other e-mail servers by installing the optional Remote Server Feature .
