Question:
Can I upgrade from V1 to V2R2 without installing V2R1?
Answer:
No, you do need to install V2R1 first (next to V1) and then install V2R2 as an ugrade to V2R1. Even though this is an extra step during your upgrade process, it only takes limited time (approximately 1 hour). There is no need to test any functionality of V2R1 during the upgrade to V2R2 (for example: print documents and compare the output), this is only necessary once V2R2 in in place.

Question:
After using the CHGSYSLIBL LIB(DTM400V2) command to place the DTM400V2 library in the system library list, I get the error message "Library DTM400V2 duplicated". How do I prevent this?
Answer:
You can prevent this error by changing all the commands in the library DTM400V2. The product library of all commands is shipped with a default value of DTM400V2, which conflicts with DTM400V2 already being present in the system portion of the library list. You should modify all commands using CHGCMD CMD(DTM400V2/command) PRDLIB(*NONE). When placing the DTM400V2 library in the system library list, you must also ensure that the initial library list (INLLIBL) of the job descriptions you use for submitting DTM jobs does not contain a reference to library DTM400V2, because this will result in the same error message.

Question:
Does DTM for iSeries work without issues under the new *TYPE2 IFS directory structure available in V5R2?
Answer:
The *TYPE2 directory format is an enhancement of the original *TYPE1 directory format of the IFS. *TYPE2 directories have a different internal structure and different implementation than *TYPE1 directories. However, all changes made by IBM to implement these *TYPE2 directories are internal to OS/400 and should have no impact on any application (including DTM for iSeries).

Question:
The WRKSPLF command shows an asterisk (*) next to the number of pages of a spooled file created using DTM for iSeries. What does that mean?

Question:
Why is the option 'Footer position is based on' on the paper settings dialog disabled?
Answer:
When the 'Footer position is based on' option is set to 'Last line', it can never be changed back to 'First line'. The 'First line' option is an artificial setting which was introduced for backward compatibility with OV/400, and is only processed at print time. Standard MS Word does not have the ability to specify the position of the first line of a footer. In MS Word you always need to specify the distance between the last line of the footer and the edge of the page. This has the advantage that the footer can never fall of the page when you alter the footer, which improves the maintainability of documents. This is the standard behavior of MS Word. We have decided that once the option is changed to 'Last Line' you can never change it back to 'First Line', because MS Word is not able to display 'First Line' in its WYSIWYG mode.

Question:
Are bullets and numbering supported by the MS Word User Interface?
Answer:
No, you should use the Numbered List instruction to generate numbered lists, just like in OfficeVision/400. If you save a document that contains bullets, the font of the text after the bullets will be changed to the symbol font during the save. You can simply select the text and change it back to the desired font to recover the text.

Question:
Why does DTM for iSeries use Profile Swapping to execute certain functions?
Answer:
DTM for iSeries needs to do Profile Swapping because adopting authorities (a similar technique used in traditional applications) is not supported when working with objects in the Integrated File System. The book "Integrated File System Introduction" states that "When using the integrated file system APIs, you can restrict access to objects as you can when using data management interfaces. Be aware, however, that adopting authorities is not supported. An integrated file system API uses the authority of the user profile under which the job is running." Question:
Why do my changes to the font size of a character style get lost after reopening the DTM document when using the DTM for iSeries MS Word UI?
Answer:
The DTM for iSeries MS Word UI uses RTF to communicate with MS Word. The problem when changing the font size is a known bug in MS Word 2000/XP: "Changes to the fontsize of a character style aren't saved when using RTF as output format". There is a work around on Word XP, if you use the 'Font ' dialog your changes get saved (the bug only occurs when you use the 'Modify style' dialog).

Question:
After saving a document in the MS Word User Interface, double quotes are replaced by another character when printing the document. What is happening?
Answer:
MS Word has an option to replace 'straight quotes' with 'smart qoutes' when saving a document. If this option is enabled the double quotes will not print on the iSeries system because most EBCDIC code pages do not have a symbol representing 'smart quotes'. To disable this option select the AutoCorrect option from the Tools menu, and deselect the appropriate option on the pages "AutoFormat As You Type" and "AutoFormat".

Question:
How are 5250 FFT help documents (including help labels) handled by DTM for iSeries?
Answer:
RFT and FFT documents containing help labels can be converted to DTM documents without loss of the help label instruction. However, DTM for iSeries is unable to create a new FFT document with help labels because of technical limitations of OS/400. The help labels of an FFT document are not stored in the document in shared folder, but in an associated hidden OS/400 object. You can verify this : copy an FFT document with help labels to a PC using drag and drop in Network Neighborhood ; rename the document on the PC ; copy the document back to the AS/400 ; the 'new' FFT is not a document of type FFT but PCFILE ; this change in type happens because there is no associated hidden object for this document. There is no IBM supported/documented function or to create or manipulate this associated object from within a user application (like DTM for iSeries). Additionally, replacing the OS/400 DSPHLPDOC with a DTM version of this command is technically impossible because OS/400 does not call this command when a user presses the F1 function key within an application. OS/400 bypasses the DSPHLPDOC command and calls an internal function to display the document at a specific help label. So there is no solution for 5250 help documents because of technical limitations in OS/400.

Question:
Can I fax documents generated by DTM for iSeries?
Answer:
DTM for iSeries allows you to do faxing in 2 different ways. One option is to do faxing just like in the OV/400 days. You have an AS/400-based fax product that monitors an outputqueue. As soon as a spooled file is created, the fax tool picks it up and faxes it. In this scenario it'll be no longer OV/400 that generates but DTM for iSeries. No changes are required to the documents, nor applications, nor fax configuration. Another approach is to use a Lotus Domino based fax solution. These tools typically fax a Notes document. Using the RSLDTMDOC command DTM for iSeries can merge a document and store the result as a Notes document in a Notes database. Some changes may be required to the documents (to retrieve the faxnumber from a DB2/400 file during the merge), and a change is probably necessary to the application to replace a PRTDOC by a RSLDTMDOC.

Question:
Does DTM for iSeries support text profiles like OV/400 does?
Answer:
DTM for iSeries does not offer support for text profiles. However, it is recommended to work around this issue by copying an existing (empty) document, instead of creating a blank new one. So instead of doing a CRTDOC DOC(newdoc) TXTPRF(profile) we suggest to do a CPYDOC FROMDOC(profile) TODOC(newdoc) followed by an EDTDOC DOC(newdoc). It basically provides the same functionality as using textprofiles in OV/400. In fact copying a document even allows you to have a default content, something which is not possible in OV/400.

How does DTM for iSeries integrate with archiving solutions?
Answer:
Documents generated by DTM for iSeries can be archived in different ways. First of all, the spooled files generated by the PRTDTMDOC command can be archived by a standard AS/400 archiving software package that supports the archival of spooled files. Secondly, the XML documents generated by the EXPDTMDOC command can be archived using any archiving software package that supports the archival of XML documents or PC files. Thirdly, the Notes RTF documents generated by the RSLDTMDOC command can be archived by a standard Lotus Domino archiving software package that treats standard Notes RTF documents.

Question:
How long does it take to migrate from OfficeVision/400 to DTM for iSeries?
Answer:
It depends. There are so many factors that will influence the timing/planning of an OV/400 migration project that it is impossible to give a general timeframe for such a project. Some of the important factors are : complexity of documents, usage of multiple fonts, knowledge of the existing OV/400 environment, printing infrastructure, number of programs involved, availability of sources, and so on.

Question:
Installation of a PTF fails with error message CPF3908 ("PTF cannot be loaded"). What could be wrong?
Answer:
When you install DTM for iSeries on a system on which a previous version of the product has already been installed, you must first of all ensure that all PTF's for this version have been applied permanently before continuing with the installation of the product. The operating system OS/400 imposes the obligation that all PTF's should be applied permanently before the modification level of an IBM licensed program is increased. This rule also applies to DTM for iSeries , since it is an IBM licensed program. When the product would nonetheless be installed on top of a previous version without all PTF's for this version having been applied permanently, any attempt to load a future PTF would invariably fail with the system error message CPF3908 ("PTF cannot be loaded"). In this case, the only way to solve this problem would be to reinstall the older version of the product, and then apply all PTF's for this version permanently. Even deleting the product with the DLTLICPGM command will not remedy this situation. OS/400 has already registered that not all PTF's of a previous version of an IBM licensed program have been applied permanently before a higher release was installed, and deleting the product will not erase this PTF registry information.

Question:
My OV/400 documents contain escape sequences that will be interpreted by the printer. Will this still work with DTM for iSeries?
Answer:
Probably this will continue to work with DTM for iSeries. Any escape sequences will be included in the spooled file and the printer should handle the datastream in exactly the same way. It is probably a good idea to spend some extra time testing this specific functionality during the migration project.

Question:
The EDTDOC command of DTM for iSeries does not allow me to specify which editor should be used (5250 or MS Word), only the EDTDTMDOC does. Is there a way to make the MS Word User Interface the default editor when using the EDTDOC command?
Answer:
Because the EDTDOC command calls the EDTDTMDOC command without specifying the parameter EDITOR, you can use the OS/400 CHGCMDDFT command to change the default value of the parameter EDITOR on the EDTDTMDOC command in library DTM400 to "*MSWORD". This way the EDTDOC command will always use the MS Word User Interface. (Notice: Keep in mind that installing a PTF or upgrading DTM for iSeries might change this value back to the original default value shipped with the product.)

Question:
When migrating from OfficeVision/400, how should the rollout of DTM for iSeries be planned?
Answer:
If possible, it is recommended to gradually move DTM for iSeries into production, based on certain criteria, e.g. departments, sections, applications or specific folders. During the initial phase of the roll out DTM for iSeries, it is recommended to have a fallback plan in place to allow switching back to OV/400 documents and applications, if there is an urgent need to do so. When all documents and applications have been migrated to DTM for iSeries, and everything has been running successfully for a couple of days/weeks/months, the OV/400 documents may be archived and removed from the system, to free up disk space.

Question:
Why doesn't DTM for iSeries support the printing of graphics (signatures, logos and so on) in an SCS spooled file, just like OV/400?
Answer:
OV/400 has always used an undocumented internal OS/400 API to put graphics in an SCS spooled file. This API was never available to customers nor business partners. Even though Inventive Designers has requested IBM to document and support this API, it has disappeared together with the full OV/400 product. As a result of this IBM decision, DTM for iSeries can not embed graphics in an SCS spooled file. Graphics are only supported in AFP and PCL5 spooled files.

Question:
We have used the OS/400 QRYDOCLIB command in Shared Folders. What is the equivalent command when working in the IFS?
Answer:
OS/400 does not have an IFS command similar to the QRYDOCLIB command. However, IBM has a number of free IFS tools that offer functions not available in standard OS/400 commands. Even though these tools are not officially supported by IBM they might be useful if you are using the Integrated File System. One of the new commands is QRYIFSLIB. This command dumps information such as file size, owner, group, etc., to outfile QRYIFSLIB in library QGPL and sums the directory size. This command is similar to the QRYDOCLIB command that some people have used in combination with OfficeVision/400. Question:
I want to create a column list merge but even though there are multiple records in the database I get only one line in the output. What is wrong?
Answer:
Please check that none of the Data Field instructions on the line generating the column list merge is defined as a Data Field instruction for generating a multiple letter merge. Additionally, make sure that the line with the Data Field instructions ends with a Required Carrier Return, not a simple Carrier Return.

Question:
The closing paragraph and the signature to be used in all documents depends on the final recipient of the letter or on the originator. How can this be accomplished?
Answer:
Using multiple Conditional Text instructions, a value retrieved from the database can define which paragraph(s) should be included in the resulting document. If you put each possible closing in a separate document and you combine the Conditional Text instructions with Include instructions you end up with a very modular solution that is easy to maintain in the future.

Question:
Can I copy text from a regular MS Word document into a DTM document?
Answer:
Yes. You can simply select and copy text from a standard MS Word session and paste it into a DTM document. Be aware that besides the text, a lot of layout information (like style and font information) will be copied into the DTM document. If you want to copy just the text, make sure you select the "Paste special" option from the "Edit" menu in the DTM document, and select "Unformatted text".

What is the recommended way to convert OV/400 shell documents?
Answer:
It is recommended to convert the OV/400 documents manually using the Import RFT Document (IMPRFTDOC) command. This procedure is very convenient since the conversion may be launched in batch during the night or over a weekend. The joblog of the conversion job should be checked to verify that no errors or warnings were issued during the process.

Question:
Can I use the MS Word User Interface through a firewall?
Answer:
The only way you can use the MS Word UI through a firewall is by using a VPN. This is because DTM uses NetServer to access the filesystem on the AS/400. The last thing you want to do is to open ports on your firewall to allow external people to use NetServer (ie Network Neighborhood). This would be very insecure. When using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), the remote client appears as a local client to the internal network. All traffic between the local network and the remote client is encrypted.

Question:
What is XML?
Answer:
From the XML FAQ at http://www.ucc.ie/xml/ : XML is the 'Extensible Markup Language' (extensible because it is not a fixed format like HTML). It is designed to enable the use of SGML on the World Wide Web. XML is not a single, predefined markup language: it's a metalanguage -- a language for describing other languages -- which lets you design your own markup. (A predefined markup language like HTML defines a way to describe information in one specific class of documents only: XML lets you define your own customized markup languages for limitless different classes of document.) It can do this because it's written in SGML, the international standard metalanguage for text markup systems.
